What’s this, another review?? How crazy!
I have quite a few books to review, so here I am rattling them off!
Demon Road by Derek Landy
Synopsis: Full of Landy’s trademark wit, action and razor sharp dialogue, DEMON ROAD kicks off with a shocking opener and never lets up the pace in an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial killers: they’re all here. And the demons? Well, that’s where Amber comes in…Sixteen years old, smart and spirited, she’s just a normal American teenager until the lies are torn away and the demons reveal themselves.
Forced to go on the run, she hurtles from one threat to another, revealing a tapestry of terror woven into the very fabric of her life. Her only chance rests with her fellow travellers, who are not at all what they appear to be…
-Spoiler free review-
I have… emotions about this book.
I love Derek Landy’s writing- it’s always so fun and amusing but I just… didn’t like this book. It wasn’t bad- not at all! I want to stress that. I was holding it to the standards of Skulduggery Pleasant, Derek’s other series; one of my favourite series ever. Because I had such high expectations, it was disappointing.
I think the thing that struck me the most was that the plot was very predictable, because a template was being used over and over again. They arrive, things seem weird, something bad happens, they escape by the skin of their teeth, run, and repeat. But surprisingly, this didn’t actually make the book boring.
Derek’s characters always work so well together, and I feel like that’s why I was eager to keep reading. The main character gave an interesting perspective to read from. I was never annoyed with her, which is a great thing to have in a book. Oh, and the character interaction! The side-characters were fun in their own right, but when you combine it with how they act around each other, you have the writing style I loved so much in Skulduggery Pleasant.
It was great to read something by Derek Landy again- I felt so nostalgic throughout. I think I will still read the sequel, and I encourage you to pick up Demon Road if you like the premise. It was not by any means a bad book! But if you don’t like to too much, like me, please still read Skulduggery Pleasant. It’s such a great series! I met Derek Landy at YALC this year (he is just wonderful by the way) and there was so much hype around the new book- I’m so so so excited to read it! Maybe use that as a reason to read Skulduggery Pleasant– and if not check out a blog post I made on tumblr where I aggressively rant about how amazing the series is.
